All About Rats

Typically associated with squalor and poverty, the truth is, rats can flourish just as easily in a high rise, high end apartment as well as they can a modest home in the country.

In the United States, the two most common species are the Norway Rat and the Attic Rat. Both brought from Europe to the New World on ships back in the 1700 and 1800’s, they have a solid foothold in the US now.

The problem with Rats are many. Most notably they can spread disease through their bites and their droppings.  And while the two species are very similar, there are definite differences in the ways you treat infestations.

Successful control of any pest is primarily dependent on the ability to correctly identify the specific pest. Just knowing that it is a rodent will not be enough.

As an example, if you set out small, wooden mouse traps when you actually have rats, the traps will be ineffective. And if you set rats traps along the floor, but have roof rats, those traps will be ineffective as well.

With any infestation its about identifying the problem correctly and taking the necessary measures to shut down the pests ability to find food and shelter. At Honest Rodent Proofing, our years of experience guarantee the right solutions to your pest needs.

01

How do I Know if I Have Rats?

Rats are nocturnal so hearing scratching at night or finding droppings around food or pets food, or burrow or nests in the daytime is a good indicator.

02

Is it Possible to Find Rats in My Attic?

Roof Rats build nests in high places like trees, tall bushes AND in attics. Since they are great climbers, Roof Rats can scale walls by wires, cables and even trees and bushes.

03

Why Are My Traps Not Catching Rats?

Rats are quite fearful of new things, unlike mice. Because of that face they may simply avoid a new trap. And if they happen to set off a trap without getting caught, they will be spooked and not return to it.

04

Are One or Two Rats a Problem?

A rat can have upwards of 6700 babies in their lifetime. In a single year, one pair of rats can generate more than 1,500 babies! Because rats as young as three months old can breed and have babies and each female can have up to 12 babies in each litter and up to seven litters in a year, it adds up fast!

05

What are Rat Slabs and What are They Used For?

A rat slab as a very thin layer of nonstructural concrete poured over crawlspace dirt. Despite its ugly name, the upgrade keeps water from percolating up from the soil (preventing ground-level mold and water damage) and creates a cleaner, more easily accessible underfloor environment.
